For years I worked hard growing my business with a vague plan that 'someday' I'd have made enough money and could retire if I wanted to. A few years later, I read a book called Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.

He says the true test of whether you actually own a business is whether you can leave it for a year or more and return to find it running more profitably than when you left it. 

If that’s not the case, then you don’t have a business, you have a job.

When I first heard this, I realised that I didn’t have a business at all, I definitely had a JOB! 

And it wasn’t even a good job.

Most people who start a business do so because they want more FREEDOM.

But the harsh reality of running your own business is that you feel anything but FREE.

When I added up ALL the hours I was working, and took into account ALL the costs of running my business… I was making less per hour than they pay at McDonalds! 

And most jobs come with perks, security, set working hours and regular pay. 

But that certainly wasn’t true of my business. 

I was working weekends to meet deadlines. 

My social life was non-existent, and I felt I was trapped on this huge hamster wheel with no way out.

The problem was, everything was WAY more difficult and time-consuming than I’d been led to believe.
I remember thinking to myself “Well this certainly isn’t what I signed up for!”

You see I was hoping to

The way I was approaching my business was all wrong.

All my energy was going into this one pursuit.

My business and personal life balance today is very different than it was a few years ago.

It’s all on my own terms. 

I set my own hours, and I take time off as and when I choose to.

I work with a limited number of hand-picked clients, mostly by phone or email, and when we DO meet in person, they travel to me.

What’s most important to me is that I’m able to fit my working hours around bringing up my two young sons.

A few years ago, I could not have conceived of spending so much quality time with my family the way I was earning my living back then.

Also these days my personal income is no longer dependent on my business, and I have outside assets set up for bringing in income without me needing to lift a finger.

The reality of completing this last piece of the puzzle is that I now make much better business decisions (because I’m not coming from a position of fear)… and I no longer NEED to grow my business.

As a side note, removing the need to grow my business has had an unexpected side-effect.

It’s resulted in me gaining much more fulfilment and enjoyment from my business, thereby causing me to grow it that much faster!
